TRAIN VS. AVALANCHE: NIGHTMARE ON THE MOUNTAIN UNVEILED!

TRAIN VS. AVALANCHE: NIGHTMARE ON THE MOUNTAIN UNVEILED!

The tranquility of a Swiss Alps train journey shattered on February 17th, replaced by a terrifying roar and a wall of white. A tourist’s camera captured the heart-stopping moment an avalanche slammed directly into a train near the famed ski resort of Zermatt.

Kirsten Osborne, an Australian woman now living in the U.K., was onboard when the mountain unleashed its fury. Her video reveals a growing cascade of snow, accelerating towards the train with relentless speed. The approaching danger was immediately recognized by a child’s repeated, anxious cries of “uh-oh!”

Within seconds, the train vanished into a swirling blizzard of snow. The impact shook the carriages violently as the avalanche engulfed the windows, momentarily blinding passengers in a thick, white cloud. It was a scene ripped from a disaster movie, unfolding in real time.

Passengers found themselves stranded for a harrowing two hours, waiting for rescue in the aftermath of the impact. Osborne recounted the tense wait before emergency services arrived to provide bus transport to safety, a small comfort after such a close call.

Remarkably, despite the sheer force of the avalanche and the dramatic collision, no one on board suffered any injuries. It was a stroke of incredible luck amidst a potentially catastrophic event.

The rail company confirmed the incident, stating that a regional train was struck by a powder-snow avalanche between Täsch and Randa. They emphasized the swift and coordinated evacuation of all passengers, working closely with emergency responders.

As a precautionary measure, operations on the St. Niklaus–Täsch route were immediately suspended, pending assessment by natural hazard specialists. The company is in constant communication with experts, evaluating the stability of the entire rail network between Disentis and Zermatt.

This incident occurred during a period of particularly dangerous winter conditions in the Swiss Alps, with heavy snowfall disrupting the tourist season and increasing avalanche risks. The mountains, normally a source of beauty and recreation, had turned menacing.

The avalanche strike followed another rail incident just a day earlier near Goppenstein, where a train derailed, injuring five people. Initial reports suggest an avalanche may have contributed to the derailment, though investigations are still underway.

Across the western Alps, large areas are currently facing heightened avalanche danger. This season has brought a stark reminder of the raw power of nature and the inherent risks of venturing into mountainous terrain during winter.
