A defiant President Trump announced plans for a sweeping 15% global tariff, escalating his trade strategy following a significant Supreme Court setback. This move, revealed on social media, signals his continued determination to reshape international commerce, even after the court limited his authority.
The Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, had ruled Trump’s previous broad tariffs unconstitutional, asserting that the power to tax resides solely with Congress. The ruling challenged tariffs imposed on nearly every country under emergency powers, a tactic now deemed unlawful.
Undeterred, Trump intends to utilize a different legal avenue, signing an executive order to impose a 10% tariff – now increased to 15% – on all imports. However, this authority is temporary, lasting only 150 days unless Congress intervenes.
The President framed his decision as a response to what he described as a “ridiculous” and “anti-American” court ruling. He vowed to implement “new and legally permissible Tariffs” in the coming months, continuing his “Making America Great Again” agenda.
The court’s decision ignited a personal rebuke from Trump, who publicly criticized even the justices he appointed, including Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, deeming their actions an “embarrassment.” He instead lauded Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s dissenting opinion and praised Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.
Tariffs have been a cornerstone of Trump’s economic policy, intended to address trade imbalances, revitalize U.S. manufacturing, and exert pressure on other nations. He repeatedly asserted, despite contrary evidence, that foreign governments – not American consumers – would bear the cost of these taxes.
As of December, the U.S. Treasury had collected over $133 billion from tariffs imposed under the now-challenged emergency powers law. The fate of these collected funds remains unclear following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
The President’s renewed tariff threat drew immediate criticism from Democrats, who accused him of attempting to “pickpocket the American people” and raise costs for consumers. California Governor Gavin Newsom stated bluntly that Trump “does not care about you.”
This latest development underscores a continuing battle over trade policy and presidential authority, with Trump signaling his unwillingness to concede ground despite the legal constraints imposed by the Supreme Court.
