A stunning reversal unfolded on the volleyball court as the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons shattered an eight-year losing streak against their rivals, Ateneo de Manila University. The victory, a thrilling 17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14 decision, resonated with the weight of years of anticipation.
Down two sets to none, the Fighting Maroons displayed a remarkable resilience, digging deep to force a deciding fifth set. It was a testament to their unwavering spirit and a new strategic approach under the guidance of Italian coach Fabio Menta.
The comeback was fueled by veteran middle blocker Niña Ytang, who delivered a powerful performance with 15 points, including the crucial final block. Irah Jaboneta battled through cramping to contribute 14 points, while Nigerian spiker Fina Ali unleashed a thunderous hit that propelled UP to match point.
Coach Menta emphasized a shift in focus, explaining that the team had initially been preoccupied with their opponents. “Finally, we found a way to play our own game,” he stated, highlighting the importance of establishing their own rhythm and maximizing their effectiveness.
This victory marked UP’s first back-to-back wins since 2022, effectively ending an eleven-game losing streak against Ateneo. The Fighting Maroons now stand as early league leaders alongside National University.
Ateneo, despite a valiant effort led by JLo Delos Santos’ 21 points and contributions from Ana Hermosura and Donna de Leon, remains winless after two matches. Their comeback attempts in the fourth and fifth sets ultimately fell short.
In men’s action, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) secured their first win, avenging a previous defeat against the five-time champion National University. They defeated La Salle in a hard-fought match, 25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 25-19.
Ateneo also claimed a victory in the men’s division, defeating UP in four sets (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18). This result created a three-way tie at 1-1 between UST, Ateneo, and UP.
The upcoming Wednesday schedule at the Smart Araneta Coliseum promises more intense competition. The men’s matches will feature UST versus Ateneo at 9 a.m. and DLSU versus UP at 11 a.m. The women will then take the court with UST facing Ateneo at 1 p.m. and DLSU battling UP at 3 p.m.
