A quiet dawn in Lviv shattered into chaos Sunday morning as a series of explosions ripped through the city center, leaving a trail of devastation and claiming the life of a young police officer.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the swift detention of a suspect following the attack, which also injured 25 others. The blasts, initially reported as a store break-in, quickly escalated into a coordinated assault targeting responding law enforcement.
The first patrol unit, arriving on Danylyshyn Street around 12:30 a.m., was met with a powerful explosion. Before reinforcements could fully assess the situation, a second blast detonated, turning a routine call into a deadly ambush.
Preliminary investigations point to the use of improvised explosive devices, cunningly concealed within ordinary garbage bins. This deliberate placement suggests a calculated attempt to maximize casualties and sow terror among the population.
Victoria Shpylka, a 23-year-old policewoman, was tragically killed in the explosions. Eleven individuals were hospitalized, including six fellow law enforcement officers whose conditions are currently listed as serious.
A massive operation was immediately launched, mobilizing explosives experts, specialized canine units, and a full complement of police resources to secure the area and gather crucial evidence.
Authorities quickly zeroed in on a 33-year-old woman from the Rivne region, detaining her several hours later near the Stary Sambir border crossing. Investigators believe she wasn’t acting alone.
Evidence suggests the woman was directed by a “curator” with ties to Russian special services, responsible for both the manufacturing and strategic placement of the explosive devices.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated there is compelling evidence linking the attack directly to Russia, characterizing it as a deliberate attempt to target Ukrainian law enforcement and exploit vulnerable citizens.
This isn’t an isolated incident, Klymenko emphasized, but part of a disturbing pattern of the enemy utilizing Ukrainian recruits to create lethal traps and inflict maximum harm.
