Lee immediately characterized the incident as “tragic,” expressing relief that President Trump was not present and well-protected. He didn’t hesitate to connect the event to a broader pattern of escalating rhetoric, pointing a finger at what he described as increasingly aggressive language emanating from the far left.
The Senator argued that this rhetoric isn’t simply inflammatory, but actively contributes to real-world violence targeting prominent figures. He emphasized the need for a de-escalation of such language, while acknowledging gratitude that the President remained safe.
The conversation then shifted to the SAVE America Act, a bill championed by Lee that would mandate proof of American citizenship and photo identification for all federal elections. He asserted the legislation enjoys overwhelming support from the American public, reflecting a widespread desire to safeguard the integrity of the voting process.
Lee stated that polls indicate between 85 and 90 percent of Americans favor requiring citizenship verification and photo ID at the polls. He believes the Senate has a responsibility to thoroughly consider the bill, and that any attempt to obstruct its passage should require a traditional, spoken filibuster.
He envisioned a scenario where opponents would be compelled to take the Senate floor and continuously speak to delay the vote, a practice he believes would underscore the bill’s popular support. However, he noted that current political maneuvering, including a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security and a trip to the Munich Security Conference by Democratic senators, could complicate the timing of any such debate.
