A diminutive woman with an outsized personality presides over a quietly expanding jewelry empire. Mayet dela Rosa’s reach extends across Metro Manila – from the bustling streets of Ongpin and Recto to the modern malls of Quezon City and Taguig – and beyond, stretching into Laguna, Antipolo, and even Pampanga. Her success isn’t just about selling jewelry; it’s about a relentless belief in the possible.
During a recent Chinese New Year event, surrounded by radio personalities and beauty queens, dela Rosa declared, “Sa Mayet dela Rosa, walang imposible” – nothing is impossible. This wasn’t merely a marketing slogan. It’s a philosophy born from a willingness to customize anything, even the seemingly absurd. She recounted a story of a customer who requested diamonds be affixed to his dentures, a task that required ten return visits for repairs.
Her creativity knows no bounds, even playfully suggesting she could craft jewelry in the likeness of a customer’s face. But beneath the playful exterior lies a story of remarkable transformation. Dela Rosa’s journey began not with gemstones, but with a chemistry degree, funded by her sibling.
The low pay of a chemist prompted a shift to the family jewelry business. It was a revelation. “Ang pagtitinda, gift ’yan,” she explained – selling is a gift, and she discovered she possessed the talent. She found a deeper connection to jewelry, noting how it could elevate one’s appearance and fill a sense of lacking. It wasn’t just about adornment; it was about empowerment.
Driven by a singular ambition – “Gusto ko talagang yumaman” (I really want to get rich) – dela Rosa built Mayet Dela Rosa Fine Jewelry from the ground up, eventually becoming a trusted wholesaler and serving a discreet clientele of celebrities she politely declines to name. She prioritizes their privacy, understanding the delicate balance of her role as a supplier.
Recognizing the need for both security and a more refined experience, she expanded beyond the vibrant, yet sometimes chaotic, Manila locations. Her mall branches offer a safer, more premium environment, a contrast to the bustling “Divisoria of jewelry” where vendors compete fiercely. She understands her customers’ needs, offering both accessibility and peace of mind.
Now, after 20 years of Mayet Dela Rosa Fine Jewelry and 25 years of the Dela Rosa Jewelry Corp., she’s not slowing down. A new venture, Maison Mayet Diamonds, is set to launch in Alabang, a 24-hour hub designed to support authorized online sellers with inventory access, live-selling spaces, and shipping assistance. She’s also opening the brand to franchising, expanding her reach even further.
The 2026 collection, unveiled at the Venice Grand Mall, centers around natural diamonds and a reimagining of the traditional engagement ring – a “full-circle diamond concept” embodying eternity. Dela Rosa emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship, focusing on both brilliance and durability, creating pieces designed for everyday wear and lasting beauty.
Alongside the diamonds, the collection features the Original Monaco Collection, robust yet lightweight gold chains with precision locking systems, and the Legacy Gold Bars. Dela Rosa believes these bars offer a sense of security in uncertain times, a tangible asset recognized globally. “Gold is universally recognized,” she stated, “something you can rely on if you ever need it.”
Despite the inherent risks of her business, dela Rosa eschews bodyguards and bulletproof vests, relying instead on a different kind of protection: “Prayers lang” (just prayers). Her prayers are simple, yet powerful – a plea for those with ill intentions to reconsider their actions.
She cherishes a small diamond ring purchased at the beginning of her career, a symbol of her humble beginnings. But the most memorable sale came from an unexpected source: a man in shorts who spent three days browsing before ultimately paying millions in cash. It was a reminder to never underestimate anyone.
Her longevity in the industry, she reveals, is rooted in a healthy dose of skepticism. “Huwag kang basta-basta magtiwala” (Don’t just trust anyone). Even when trust is given, a degree of doubt is essential. Continuous learning is also paramount. “Dapat pagdating sa alahas, laging may second thoughts” (when it comes to jewelry, always have second thoughts). “Hindi ka pwedeng tumigil. Lagi pa ring magaaral tungkol sa alahas, para mas mag-grow ka” (You can never stop. Always study about jewelry, so you’ll grow).
