A quiet Thursday afternoon in Kleinburg was shattered by a brazen attempt that unfolded in a commercial plaza. Police responded to a call regarding a suspicious vehicle near Islington Ave. and Stegman’s Mill Rd., unknowingly stepping into the midst of a developing crime.
The initial report described a grey Honda CRV, its two occupants concealed behind ski masks, pulling into the parking lot around 1 p.m. Before any action could be taken, the vehicle abruptly fled as the property owner approached, raising immediate alarm.
In a stunning turn, the same vehicle returned while investigators were still gathering information inside a nearby business. This time, it parked directly in front of the unit, effectively blocking access and escalating the situation.
Officers swiftly moved to contain the vehicle, but the occupants reacted with immediate flight, abandoning the CRV and scattering on foot. A pursuit ensued, testing the officers’ speed and resolve.
One suspect was quickly apprehended after a short chase. The second proved more elusive, attempting to vanish into the surrounding neighborhood. A coordinated search, utilizing canine units and air support, was launched to track the fleeing individual.
The search culminated in the suspect’s discovery, hiding within a shed in a nearby backyard. With the combined efforts of the specialized units, both suspects were taken into custody without any reported injuries.
The vehicle itself was confirmed as stolen, having been taken from Toronto on February 8th. Investigators believe this incident is connected to a series of similar crimes in the region, prompting the release of suspect photos to the public.
Joshua Adams, 22, and Anthony Mitchell, 24, now face serious charges including attempted robbery, disguise with intent, and possession of stolen property exceeding $5,000. The investigation continues as authorities seek to link them to other offenses.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is urged to contact the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit or Crime Stoppers. Authorities are seeking any details that could further the investigation and ensure the safety of the community.
