OpenClaw SHUTDOWN: The Shocking Reason Why It Vanished!

OpenClaw SHUTDOWN: The Shocking Reason Why It Vanished!

A wave of sudden account bans is sweeping through the AI community, targeting users of the powerful, open-source agent, OpenClaw. Both Anthropic and Google have begun quietly shutting down accounts linked to the viral AI, leaving many users locked out without explanation.

The issue centers around how OpenClaw accesses these AI models. Users were leveraging flat-rate subscription plans – typically around $200-$250 per month – through OAuth credentials, essentially “logging in” to OpenClaw with their existing Claude or Gemini accounts. This method allowed for unrestricted access, but it’s now deemed unacceptable by the AI providers.

OAuth, a common login method used across the internet (“Login with Google,” for example), isn’t the problem itself. The core issue is using these flat-rate subscriptions, designed for individual use, to fuel the voracious appetite of OpenClaw’s advanced AI capabilities.

OpenClaw is unique in its ability to consume AI tokens at an astonishing rate. While a typical ChatGPT interaction might use a few thousand tokens, a simple query to OpenClaw could easily burn through 30,000 – or far more during an extended session. This massive token usage translates to significant financial losses for Anthropic and Google.

Google DeepMind engineer Varun Mohan explained the crackdown was necessary to combat “malicious usage” and restore service quality for legitimate users. The surge in OpenClaw-driven OAuth activity was degrading the experience for others on the same flat-rate plans, leading to connectivity issues and slowdowns.

While account bans are often immediate and without warning, most affected Google users retain access to core Google services like Gmail and Drive. However, losing access to a premium AI account, particularly without a refund, is a significant blow.

The creator of OpenClaw, recently hired by OpenAI, has acknowledged the issue and is likely to remove support for Google’s Antigravity OAuth credentials. Interestingly, ChatGPT hasn’t yet implemented similar bans, potentially due to this new alignment with OpenAI.

There is an alternative: using API keys with pay-as-you-go pricing. While this can lead to substantial bills for heavy OpenClaw users, it’s the officially sanctioned method of access. However, the era of freely leveraging flat-rate subscriptions with OpenClaw appears to be over.

The speed of OpenClaw’s rise to prominence – from obscurity to widespread adoption in a matter of weeks – undoubtedly accelerated this crackdown. Unlike previous third-party tools, OpenClaw’s impact was too significant to ignore, forcing Anthropic and Google to act decisively.

For those seeking to continue using OpenClaw, understanding the distinction between OAuth and API access is now crucial. The convenience of OAuth access is fading, replaced by the necessity of a more controlled, and potentially more expensive, API-based approach.
