THEY ATTACKED PRIDE: Salon Under Siege!

A vibrant symbol of inclusivity has become a repeated target in Leicester, as a Pride flag outside The Secret Garden Hair salon was torn down for the sixth time in three years. The salon, a haven for gender-neutral styling, first raised the flag when embracing a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Newly released CCTV footage captures the brazen act: two men, in the early hours of Sunday morning, deliberately dismantling the flag. One scaled a utility pole, wrenching the flagpole from its mount while the other documented the act with photographs.

Salon co-owner George Waterfield discovered the missing flag and immediately reviewed the security footage. “Two grown people are ripping down the flag, standing on each other’s shoulders,” he stated, visibly disturbed by the incident. “This isn’t our first rodeo – we’ve had this happen six times now, which is insane.”

This isn’t an isolated event. Just last September, a man cycled directly into the flag, tearing it down and riding over it before fleeing. Weeks later, it was stolen again, highlighting a pattern of hostility. The repeated attacks underscore a troubling trend of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment.

The Secret Garden Hair made a conscious decision to become gender-neutral in 2023, eliminating separate booking systems for “gents” and “ladies” cuts. For George, it was a matter of basic respect, particularly for transgender and non-binary individuals who often face discomfort or outright rejection in traditional salons.

“You should be paying for what haircut you are having, not for what gender you are,” George explained. The flag serves as a beacon of safety and acceptance, assuring clients they will be treated without judgment. It’s a visual promise of a welcoming space.

The UK’s standing as a progressive nation for LGBTQ+ rights has been slipping. Once ranked the most LGBTQ+-friendly country in Europe, it has fallen to 22nd place in the last decade. This decline is largely attributed to the erosion of trans rights and a disturbing rise in hate crimes.

Recent statistics reveal a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes, with over 18,000 reported incidents motivated by sexual orientation and more than 3,000 transphobic crimes in the past year. These numbers paint a stark picture of increasing intolerance.

Despite the repeated vandalism, George and Darren remain resolute. “We’ll be hanging the pride flag back up, and we will be flying it with pride,” George affirmed. “This is what we stand for and no one is going to stop us.”

Local police are investigating the incident, reviewing CCTV footage to identify the individuals involved. The act of defiance, however, only strengthens the salon’s commitment to inclusivity and serves as a powerful statement against hate.
