A Cincinnati courtroom erupted into violence Tuesday, the simmering grief and rage of two families boiling over after a sentencing in the shooting death of a seventeen-year-old. The scene descended into a full-blown brawl, transforming a somber legal proceeding into chaotic pandemonium.
Latrelle Rogers, twenty years old, received a sentence of twelve to seventeen and a half years after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Edwin “Myzell” Arrington. The reduced charge offered little solace to the Arrington family, who had braced for a far more severe outcome.
As Judge Robert Winkler concluded the sentencing, a voice from Rogers’ family rang out, declaring, “Love you.” This simple expression of affection ignited an immediate and furious response from Arrington’s family, a shouted obscenity shattering the tense silence.
The initial verbal exchange quickly escalated into physical confrontation, the fight spilling out of the courtroom and into the courthouse hallways. Witnesses described a chaotic scene of pushing, shoving, and unrestrained anger.
Judge Christopher McDowell, presiding in a nearby courtroom, described the disturbance as deafening, disrupting ongoing proceedings. He reported seeing multiple individuals taken into custody, resisting the orders of deputies attempting to restore order.
The courthouse was temporarily shut down, all remaining hearings for the morning canceled as authorities struggled to contain the escalating violence. Multiple citations were issued, though the exact number of arrests remains unclear.
The tragic events stem from a shooting that occurred in Cincinnati’s University Heights neighborhood on New Year’s Day. Officers discovered Arrington suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and Rogers was apprehended more than four months later.
Prior to the plea agreement, Rogers faced significantly more serious charges, including two counts of murder and two counts of felonious assault. The case, already steeped in sorrow, now carries the added weight of a public and violent outburst of grief and retribution.
