The sprawling metropolis is inching closer to a significant expansion of its rail network. Authorities are focused on securing the final pieces of land needed to extend the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) further into Cavite province, a crucial step towards easing congestion and connecting more communities.
Progress is steadily being made on the ambitious Cavite extension project. Phase 1, already operational in 2024, added five stations and a 6.2-kilometer stretch, linking Baclaran in Pasay City to Dr. Santos in Parañaque City – a tangible improvement for daily commuters.
The remaining phases, 2 and 3, represent the core of the current effort. These segments will bring the LRT-1 to key areas within Cavite, including Las Piñas, Zapote, and Niog, promising a significant boost to accessibility for residents.
Securing the right-of-way – the land needed for construction – is the immediate priority. Officials aim to finalize acquisition for segments 2 and 3 within the year, or early next, with Segment 3 already fully secured and Segment 2 nearing 70% completion.
A significant hurdle has emerged in the form of an existing flyover that intersects the planned rail line. However, authorities assure that construction can proceed without redesigning the alignment, as detailed plans haven’t been submitted yet – the focus remains squarely on land acquisition.
Looking ahead, plans are already being considered for future expansion. The Department of Transportation has requested additional funding for a potential new station in Bacoor City, though implementing this would require adjustments to the existing concession agreement.
While adding stations is a possibility, the immediate goal is to deliver the currently planned extension. Officials emphasize that any further modifications will be addressed in the future, after the core project is firmly underway and operational.
This project represents a substantial investment in the region’s infrastructure, promising to reshape commuting patterns and unlock economic opportunities for communities along the LRT-1 corridor.
