SONY INVADES: Music Powerhouse Drops Anchor in the Philippines!

SONY INVADES: Music Powerhouse Drops Anchor in the Philippines!

A new chapter has begun for Filipino music with the launch of Sony Music Publishing’s (SMP) flagship office in Manila. This isn’t simply an expansion; it’s a commitment to nurturing the incredible songwriting talent within the Philippines and amplifying their voices on a global scale.

Leading this charge is Stephanie Ortiz, appointed as General Manager of SMP Philippines. Simultaneously, Roslyn Pineda, formerly of Sony Music Entertainment Philippines, has been elevated to President of SMP Asia, a pivotal role based in Hong Kong, signaling a broader regional focus.

Ortiz immediately identified a critical need: education. Many Filipino songwriters are unaware of the intricacies of music publishing and how to fully benefit from their creations. SMP Philippines, in partnership with organizations like the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (FILSCAP), will prioritize empowering songwriters with knowledge of their rights and revenue streams.

The vision extends beyond individual success. Ortiz emphasized the importance of building a strong community, connecting Filipino songwriters and producers to foster collaboration before presenting their work to the world. The focus is on cultivating talent from the ground up, creating a vibrant local ecosystem.

Guy Henderson, President of SMP International, sees a monumental opportunity. He points to the global phenomenon of audiences embracing music in languages other than their own, a trend that directly benefits the Philippines’ burgeoning music scene. The world is listening, and Filipino music is poised to be heard.

In an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, SMP is dedicated to protecting songwriters. Henderson explained their strategy involves both embracing creative tools and actively advocating for stronger legal protections to safeguard their work.

The launch event showcased the rising stars of Filipino music, featuring a panel discussion with key songwriters from P-pop sensation SB19 and the acclaimed OPM band Ben&Ben. Their insights offered a glimpse into the creative heart of the nation’s sound.

John Paulo Nase, known as Pablo, SB19’s leader and songwriter, shared his philosophy: a song’s message is paramount. He believes a truly great song resonates even after years, a testament to its enduring quality. Their recent release, “VISA,” tackles the difficult realities faced by Filipinos seeking opportunities abroad.

Paolo Benjamin of Ben&Ben articulated the importance of purpose in songwriting. He explained that understanding *why* a song exists – whether to provoke thought or offer solace – serves as its guiding principle. Their latest track, “Duyan,” exemplifies this thoughtful approach.

The collaborative spirit between SB19 and Ben&Ben was also highlighted, referencing their powerful 2021 track, “Kapangyarihan,” which has become an anthem for social movements. Both groups expressed profound gratitude for the impact their music has had on listeners.

Nase described the “highest honor” as hearing stories of how their songs have helped others, a sentiment echoed by Benjamin, who called it “the biggest mystery of life” – a beautiful, unpredictable connection between creator and audience.

Roslyn Pineda, in her new role as President of SMP Asia, acknowledged the historical challenges Filipino songwriters have faced in accessing global markets. She emphasized the need for increased resources and education to bridge the gap and unlock the full potential of Filipino talent.

Pineda’s vision aligns with a broader trend: the globalization of music. Genres like P-pop, initially popular within Asia, are now gaining traction worldwide, proving that musical boundaries are dissolving and new sounds are captivating audiences everywhere.
