TEXAS JAIL HELL: Canadian Left to ROT in Toxic Conditions!

TEXAS JAIL HELL: Canadian Left to ROT in Toxic Conditions!

Curtis Wright, a man born in Edmonton, Alberta, has spent months trapped within the walls of a Texas detention facility. For nearly three decades, he built a life in the United States, a life now hanging in the balance as he awaits a resolution to his case.

The nightmare began on a November evening. Wright, returning from a business trip to Mexico, sent a text to his fiancé, Kayla Thomsen, informing her he was being held for secondary screening at a Houston airport. A family dinner, filled with the excited anticipation of children awaiting their father, quickly dissolved into agonizing uncertainty.

Hours of silence stretched into a chilling realization: Wright was being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The reason? A decades-old drug possession conviction from his high school years – a youthful mistake for which he completed community service. Now, that past is threatening to shatter his present.

Conditions inside the South Texas Detention Facility are brutal, according to Thomsen. She describes a place of relentless cold, overcrowded cells, and inadequate food and water. Wright himself reportedly fell ill after drinking contaminated water, adding another layer of suffering to his ordeal.

The legal process has been agonizingly slow. A scheduled virtual court date came and went with no judge appearing. Another date was set, then another, each one dissolving into further delay and unanswered questions. Wright remains in limbo, his fate uncertain.

Thomsen faces a heartbreaking dilemma. Wright could potentially return to Canada, but doing so would jeopardize his custody arrangement with his two sons from a previous marriage. He is a permanent resident of the U.S., a dedicated father, and a valued worker in the oil and gas industry.

The emotional toll is immense. Thomsen recounts a recent visit with their 18-month-old daughter, a scene of heartbreaking desperation as the child reached for her father through the glass, unable to understand why she couldn’t hold him. Wright, visibly distraught, wept at his separation from his family.

Wright’s past isn’t without complexities. He faced previous arrests, including one for impaired driving and another involving a firearm found during a traffic stop. However, he was never convicted in those instances, and they are not cited as reasons for his current detention.

Those who know Wright speak of a man transformed. He has been sober for five years and dedicates himself to helping others battling addiction through Alcoholics Anonymous. He extends this compassion even within the detention facility, offering support to fellow detainees.

Thomsen believes Wright’s case is part of a larger, troubling pattern. She fears that anyone, regardless of their visa status or background, is vulnerable to detention. “It just doesn’t make any sense,” she says, grappling with the injustice of it all.

He has been moved between facilities four times, each transfer adding to the disorientation and despair. One meal, Thomsen recounts, consisted of a single, frozen waffle. The lack of basic necessities, combined with the emotional strain, is slowly eroding his spirit.
