OCEAN BOOM: Fish Catches SKYROCKET – What's REALLY Happening?

OCEAN BOOM: Fish Catches SKYROCKET – What's REALLY Happening?

January saw a surge in the nation’s fish supply, with regional fish ports collectively receiving 40,460 metric tons – a 2.7% increase compared to the previous year. This boost signals a positive start to the year for the Philippine fishing industry, promising greater availability for consumers.

Leading the charge was the General Santos Fish Port Complex, a powerhouse of activity that hauled in an impressive 24,908 metric tons of fresh catches. This substantial volume underscores the port’s critical role in supplying the country with a significant portion of its seafood.

Not far behind, the Navotas Fish Port Complex recorded the second-highest volume, landing 14,843 metric tons. This port remains a vital hub for the distribution of fish throughout the metropolitan areas and beyond.

Davao Fish Port Complex experienced the most dramatic growth, witnessing a nearly fourfold increase in landings, reaching 1,719 metric tons. This remarkable jump suggests a revitalization of fishing activity in the region, potentially driven by improved conditions or increased yields.

Iloilo Fish Port Complex also contributed to the overall increase, with a solid 9.91% rise in volume, totaling 1,750 metric tons. The steady growth in Iloilo highlights the importance of regional ports in bolstering the national fish supply.

Smaller, yet significant gains were observed at Lucena Fish Port Complex (Quezon) and Zamboanga Fish Port Complex, with increases of 1,602 MT and 22.8% respectively (425 MT). These incremental improvements demonstrate a widespread positive trend across multiple regions.

The Bulan Fish Port Complex in Sorsogon added 1,041 metric tons to the national total, further solidifying the contribution of various fishing communities. Each port plays a crucial role in the complex network that brings seafood to tables across the Philippines.

Looking ahead, the industry anticipates even greater volumes in February. The opening of the annual fishing season in key waters – the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Palawan, and the Visayan Sea – is expected to unleash a fresh wave of catches, promising an abundant supply of fish for the coming months.
