In 2016, the established national security community dismissed him as unqualified, even reckless. Fifty former GOP officials publicly warned he’d jeopardize national security, and a former Secretary of Defense questioned his judgment regarding nuclear weapons. They fundamentally miscalculated Donald Trump’s priorities.
Trump viewed the safety of the American people as his paramount duty. He understood the grave danger posed by Iran – the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, a regime openly hostile to the United States, and relentlessly pursuing nuclear capabilities. The threat wasn’t simply a matter of regional instability; it was an existential risk.
For years, the international community attempted to contain Iran’s nuclear ambitions. The 2010 Stuxnet cyberattack, for example, significantly damaged Iran’s Natanz facility, reportedly delaying their progress by two years. But Iran consistently rebuilt and expanded its program, defying international oversight.
The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – the “Iran Deal” – was championed by many of those same experts who doubted Trump. He immediately condemned it as a “horrible, one-sided deal,” rightly pointing out its failure to address Iran’s ballistic missile program and its eventual expiration of restrictions.
In 2018, President Trump decisively withdrew the U.S. from the Iran Deal, acting on his conviction that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon. This wasn’t a rash decision, but a calculated move based on a clear-eyed assessment of the threat.
A particularly troubling aspect of the Iran Deal was the exclusion of American inspectors from IAEA teams. Despite the U.S. being the IAEA’s largest financial contributor – providing over 25% of its budget – American expertise was deemed unnecessary. This was unacceptable.
Evidence revealed a dangerous collaboration between Iran and North Korea, dating back to the 1980s. Open-source intelligence confirmed Iranian experts were present at North Korean missile launches, and both nations shared the same miniaturized nuclear warhead design, originating with Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan.
In 2012, a formal agreement for scientific and technological cooperation was signed between North Korea and Iran, with Ayatollah Khamenei urging both countries to persevere despite international pressure. Iran subsequently stationed personnel in North Korea to bolster missile and nuclear development.
This long-standing alliance shouldn’t have been surprising. Iran provided crucial funding for North Korea’s missile program, and the similarities between Iran’s Shahab and North Korea’s Taepodong missiles were striking. The pattern of illicit cooperation was undeniable.
Last year, President Trump authorized Operation Midnight Hammer, a decisive strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. This followed Operation Epic Fury, launched after the IAEA reported suspicious activity at Iranian uranium enrichment sites. These actions were not taken lightly.
The results were significant. As Senator Lindsey Graham observed, Iran’s terrorist infrastructure was severely damaged, and the regime was brought to the brink of collapse. Intelligence also revealed Iran was rebuilding its ballistic missile program, receiving vital components – sodium perchlorate – from China.
Previous administrations had offered Iran concessions and cash, effectively prolonging the threat. President Trump, however, trusted his instincts and prioritized the long-term security of the United States, refusing to accept the risk of a nuclear-armed Iran.
His actions sent a clear message to China and Russia: this President would not hesitate to defend American interests. He prioritized the safety of the American people above all else, and he refused to defer difficult decisions to future generations.
The world witnessed a demonstration of resolute American leadership. President Trump’s commitment to protecting the nation, and his willingness to confront threats directly, redefined expectations on the global stage.
