Recent demonstrations featuring slogans like “Hands Off Iran” and declarations of support for the Ayatollah raise unsettling questions. The displays, alongside calls to “Globalize the Intifada,” appear deeply counterintuitive, hinting at a calculated effort to manipulate public sentiment.
One organization frequently at the center of such controversies is the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). Its history is marked by a significant connection to a major terrorism case – the 2007 Holy Land Foundation trial, the largest successful prosecution of its kind in U.S. history.
During that trial, CAIR was identified as an associate of the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization with a complex and often controversial history. Furthermore, CAIR received early funding from the Holy Land Foundation, which was later officially designated a global terrorist entity by the U.S. Treasury for its support of jihadist groups.
Ghassan Elashi, a founding member of CAIR’s Texas branch and a key figure in the Holy Land Foundation, received a 65-year prison sentence. He was convicted on charges including conspiracy to support a designated terrorist organization and money laundering, illustrating the gravity of the connections.
The FBI itself severed formal contact with CAIR, citing evidence of a relationship with Hamas. This decision underscores the serious concerns held by law enforcement regarding the organization’s potential ties to extremist groups.
One observer, identifying himself as David, expressed profound bewilderment at CAIR’s continued operation. He described the organization as channeling funds into a broad network of groups pursuing an Islamist agenda – a movement distinct from, but related to, violent jihad.
Islamism, David explained, aims to advance a radical Islamic movement through political and social means, utilizing activism and social-justice campaigns as tools for broader influence. This strategy, he argued, seeks to reshape societal norms and political landscapes.
David also pointed to the strategic use of the term “Islamophobia” as a means of silencing legitimate criticism. He contends that framing any concern about Islamist activities as bigotry obscures genuine issues of racism, hatred, and other forms of prejudice.
He observed a disconnect between performative activism – slogans on signs without deeper engagement – and genuine understanding of the complex issues at play, particularly among certain progressive groups. He questioned the sincerity of activism limited to superficial displays.
The Iranian regime, David emphasized, has maintained its grip on power for nearly half a century through systematic repression. Its survival relies on fear, imprisonment, torture, and the brutal suppression of dissent.
He passionately advocated for listening to the voices of the Iranian diaspora – the millions forced into exile but who continue to yearn for a free Iran. He described this community as a “nation in exile,” holding onto the hope of returning home.
Recent strikes by the U.S. and Israel, David noted, have ignited a sense of hope within the diaspora, fueling the belief that a democratic Iran may one day be within reach. He expressed dismay that some Western activists appear to support the continuation of the current repressive regime.
