Representative Tony Gonzales of Texas announced he will not pursue re-election, a decision made amidst a deepening House Ethics investigation and the public revelation of a personal failing. The announcement came Thursday evening, marking a dramatic turn for the three-term congressman.

Gonzales publicly admitted to an affair with a former staffer during a radio interview, a confession made just days after securing a spot in the GOP primary runoff. He framed the admission as a taking of responsibility for a “lapse in judgment” and a “lack of faith,” stating he had sought and received forgiveness.

The House Ethics Committee launched its own investigation Wednesday, focusing on allegations of sexual misconduct and potential misuse of congressional privileges related to the affair. The inquiry casts a long shadow over Gonzales’s political future and raises serious questions about his conduct in office.

Tragically, the former staffer involved, Regina Santos-Aviles, died late last year after setting herself on fire outside her home. Her death adds a layer of profound sorrow and complexity to the unfolding situation.

Republican leadership had publicly urged Gonzales to withdraw from the race, citing the gravity of the allegations and the need for the Ethics Committee to conduct a thorough investigation. Speaker Mike Johnson and other top Republicans emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns directly with constituents.

Gonzales, a veteran who served 20 years in the military, had previously resisted calls to step down, claiming not all the facts were known. He maintained a commitment to his district, highlighting his work on issues like border security and recovery efforts following a devastating school shooting.

His departure from the race now clears the path for challenger Brandon Herrera to secure the nomination. Herrera narrowly surpassed Gonzales in the initial primary vote, forcing a runoff that will no longer take place.

Herrera welcomed Gonzales’s decision, expressing his readiness to represent the district and address critical issues facing the region, from border security to water rights. He framed his candidacy as a commitment to making Texas proud.

Gonzales, in his statement, affirmed his dedication to serving out the remainder of his current term, expressing gratitude for the support of his constituents and reaffirming his commitment to fighting for their interests.

Despite the scandal, Gonzales spoke of reconciliation with his wife, Angel, and a renewed strength in his faith. He emphasized his dedication to the country and his commitment to upholding the oath he swore to defend it.
