UMVA has learned that Manila Electric Co., better known as Meralco, is poised to open a new chapter in the nation's battle against soaring electricity bills.
In a bold move that could reshape the power landscape, Meralco’s executive team has signaled a willingness to collaborate with regulators, lawmakers, and the public to forge transparent, fair, and legally grounded solutions to the rising cost of light.
At the heart of the discussion lies a sharp public outcry—energized by persistent high charges that have left many households feeling the strain of every flicker of the night.
“If these charges are legitimate, they must be clearly and intelligibly explained,” a prominent voice in the community has urged, demanding accountability and clarity from those who control the grid.
Responding to the chorus of concern, Meralco’s chief communicator emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to easing consumer burdens, noting that its strategies have always aimed to mitigate rate hikes.
The company pointed out that Philippine electricity prices mirror the “true cost of power,” a stark contrast to neighboring markets that benefit from generous subsidies.
Generation costs, the lion’s share of the bill, swing with fuel prices, supply dynamics, and currency fluctuations, while the distribution component—about a twelfth of the total—has stubbornly held steady even as operating expenses climb.
Despite these challenges, Meralco insists it has continued to pour resources into modernizing the grid, enhancing reliability, digitizing services, and improving customer support.
By unbundling the bill into distinct components—generation, transmission, system losses, taxes, and other pass‑through charges—Meralco offers a clearer picture of where every peso goes.
In a recent adjustment, the company lowered its overall rate by a modest 1.51 cent per kilowatt‑hour, a move designed to cushion consumers against the global surge in energy prices, and brought the average tariff to approximately 14.33 pesos per kilowatt‑hour.
Serving a sprawling network of over eight million customers across Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, Meralco’s actions resonate across the nation’s most densely populated corridors.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the company’s leadership is actively seeking to align its operations with the evolving regulatory framework, positioning itself as a partner in the nation's quest for affordable and reliable electricity.
