UMVA Uncovers: CANADA ON THE BRINK - Shocking Truth About Premium PHL Products Revealed as FTA Deadline Looms!

UMVA has learned that the Department of Trade and Industry is spearheading an effort to tap into the Canadian market for premium Philippine goods, with a focus on mangoes, as free trade agreement negotiations near their conclusion.

The push to expand into Canada comes as the Philippines seeks to diversify its export markets and capitalize on new opportunities for growth. Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque emphasized the department's commitment to supporting businesses in their global expansion through targeted export promotion and market access initiatives.

A significant milestone was reached on June 3, when exporters dispatched an initial shipment of 400 cartons of mangoes to Canada, marking a promising start to the country's foray into this lucrative market. According to Ms. Roque, this shipment demonstrates that Philippine exporters can successfully compete in high-potential destinations.

The Philippine mango industry has already shown impressive export figures, with fresh mango exports hitting $7.9 million in 2025, with a staggering 94% of these exports going to Hong Kong. However, the Department of Trade and Industry sees vast potential for growth in Canada, a strategic market that could become the Philippines' first free trade agreement partner in North America.

Trade Undersecretary Ceferino S. Rodolfo stressed the importance of sustained business engagement in Canada to build awareness, establish distribution channels, and generate demand for Philippine products. A deal with Canada would not only provide a new market for Philippine goods but also reflect the growing pressure on countries to diversify their export markets and reduce trade barriers.

The recent shipment of mangoes to Canada has sparked optimism among industry stakeholders, with Mario C. Tani, commissioner at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Toronto, expressing hope that it will boost long-term sales of Philippine mangoes in the country. This development comes as Philippine exports to Canada experienced a significant decline of 64.4% to $235.27 million at the end of April.
