FARM OUTPUT EXPLOSION: Get Ready for a BOOM!

FARM OUTPUT EXPLOSION: Get Ready for a BOOM!

A surge in agricultural production is anticipated this quarter, promising a stronger performance than the 2% growth seen during the same period last year. The Agriculture Secretary indicated a cautiously optimistic outlook, dependent on favorable weather conditions.

Poultry and key crops – notably corn and onions – are leading the charge, fueling expectations for a robust sector performance. Increased yields in rice and fisheries are also poised to contribute significantly to the overall positive trend.

Precise growth targets remain under review, as the Department of Agriculture carefully assesses the ripple effects of recent global events. The ongoing situation in the Middle East is prompting a recalibration of forecasts, particularly concerning fuel and logistical costs.

The conflict’s impact is expected to be felt most acutely in the price of synthetic fertilizers, heavily reliant on petroleum, and the operational expenses of farmers and those in the fishing industry. Rising risk premiums on shipments traversing the Persian Gulf could further inflate freight costs.

The first quarter of the year already demonstrated positive momentum, with farm output reaching P438.02 billion – a 2% increase from the previous year’s P429.62 billion. This initial growth was largely propelled by a remarkable 9.8% expansion in poultry production.

While crop production saw a modest 1% increase and fisheries output rose by 1.5%, the livestock sector experienced a 2.8% decline. This downturn was primarily attributed to the ongoing challenges posed by African Swine Fever and its impact on the hog population.

Looking ahead, the Department of Agriculture is focused on revitalizing the swine industry. Ambitious repopulation programs and the rollout of ASF vaccination initiatives are expected to drive a recovery in this crucial sector throughout the year.
