IRAN'S SECRET WAR: 20 Years of Attacks REVEALED!

The image is seared into history: Iranian students scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, November 4, 1979. It wasn’t a spontaneous outburst, but the opening act in a decades-long, meticulously planned campaign of hostility directed at the United States – a war waged through shadows and proxies, often unseen by the world.

While recent U.S. actions against Iran are often portrayed as unprovoked, the reality is far more complex. For years, the Iranian regime has actively engaged in a relentless assault on American interests, employing a diverse arsenal of tactics from cyber warfare to direct attacks through allied groups. The chilling chant of “Death to America,” far from being mere rhetoric, has been a formalized component of Iranian state ceremonies since the revolution, echoing even in the pronouncements of its highest leaders.

At the core of Iran’s aggressive posture lies its constitution, which explicitly tasks the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) with exporting the Islamic Revolution. This isn’t a political disagreement; it’s an ideological imperative, framing the United States as the “Great Satan” and conflict as a religious duty. This deeply held belief fuels a constant drive to undermine American influence globally.

Since 2000, the scale of Iranian aggression has been staggering. Through proxies like Hezbollah, the Houthis, and various Iraqi militias, Tehran has orchestrated hundreds of kinetic and cyber attacks against U.S. personnel, assets, and allies. Many of these attacks remain hidden, lost in the complexities of cyberspace or deliberately obscured, but U.S. intelligence consistently points to Iranian involvement.

The Iraq War, from 2003 to 2011, became a brutal testing ground. Iran-backed militias, like Kataib Hezbollah and Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, were responsible for at least 603 American deaths – nearly one in six combat fatalities. The IRGC didn’t just offer support; they supplied advanced weaponry, including specialized explosives designed to penetrate armored vehicles, directly contributing to the loss of American lives.

The audacity of these groups was chillingly demonstrated in January 2007, when IRGC-affiliated militants, disguised as U.S. soldiers, infiltrated a joint coordination center in Karbala and murdered five American soldiers. Even before 9/11, evidence suggests Iran facilitated the travel of al-Qaeda members, some of whom would later become hijackers, and provided training to the terrorist organization.

The violence wasn’t confined to Iraq. In 2002, a U.S.-Israeli citizen was killed in the West Bank by Iran-backed gunmen. A bombing in Gaza in 2003 claimed the lives of three U.S. diplomatic personnel. These weren’t isolated incidents, but deliberate acts woven into a broader strategy of destabilization and aggression.

Escalation came to a head in late 2019 and early 2020. A rocket attack in December 2019 killed an American contractor, triggering a series of events that culminated in the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad by IRGC-instigated demonstrators and militants. The subsequent killing of Qasem Soleimani led to a direct Iranian military strike – a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting Al-Asad Air Base in Iraq, the first such attack in history.

The attacks continued relentlessly. In 2023, an Iranian drone struck a U.S. base in Syria, killing a contractor and wounding five troops. Between October 2023 and January 2024, over 160 rocket, missile, and drone strikes targeted U.S. and coalition forces across the region. A particularly devastating attack in Jordan in January 2024, claimed the lives of three U.S. soldiers and injured over 40, marking the deadliest attack on American troops in the region in a decade.

The frequency and intensity of these attacks surged, with Iran and its proxies launching more than 180 attacks between October 2023 and November 2024, wounding over 180 service members. Even as recently as June 2025, attacks resumed against U.S. bases in Syria and Iraq, coinciding with heightened tensions in the region. The pattern is undeniable: a sustained, deliberate campaign of aggression.

Beyond kinetic attacks, Iran has waged a sophisticated cyber war against the United States. From Operation Ababil, a massive DDoS attack against U.S. financial institutions in 2011-2013, to the Shamoon wiper malware that crippled Saudi Aramco in 2012, Iranian hackers have repeatedly targeted critical infrastructure and sensitive data. They’ve infiltrated government networks, stolen intellectual property, and even attempted to influence elections.

The targeting has become increasingly brazen. In 2021, the FBI thwarted a cyberattack on Boston Children’s Hospital. In 2022, Iran launched a destructive wiper attack against Albania, prompting the nation to sever diplomatic ties. More recently, Iranian actors gained access to the SCADA systems controlling water utilities in the U.S., raising the terrifying prospect of manipulating chemical levels.

The IRGC hasn’t limited itself to cyberattacks. They’ve actively plotted assassinations on U.S. soil, targeting figures like the Saudi ambassador, John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and even former President Trump. These plots, often involving recruitment of hitmen and substantial financial incentives, demonstrate a willingness to cross lines previously considered unthinkable.

For years, Iran has perfected a strategy of asymmetric warfare – using proxy forces and covert operations to inflict costs on the United States without triggering a full-scale conflict. This strategy, however, is now facing a critical juncture, challenged by recent escalations and a shifting geopolitical landscape. The weight of accumulated aggression is reshaping the dynamics of the conflict.
