SCHUMER'S HYPOCRISY: He SHUT DOWN Oil Reserves for Trump, NOW DEMANDS They Be DRAINED!

SCHUMER'S HYPOCRISY: He SHUT DOWN Oil Reserves for Trump, NOW DEMANDS They Be DRAINED!

A stark reversal is unfolding in Washington as a leading Senate Democrat now urges President Trump to utilize the nation’s strategic oil reserves. This call to action comes years after the same senator actively blocked the former president’s attempt to *build* those reserves when oil prices were dramatically lower.

Senator Schumer, representing New York, publicly implored President Trump to release barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) amidst escalating oil prices fueled by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. He asserted the reserve was specifically designed for precisely these kinds of global crises, a moment to leverage national resources for stability.

Schumer’s statement sharply criticized the current administration, claiming a refusal to act despite the SPR’s intended purpose. He argued releasing oil would immediately stabilize markets, lower prices, and alleviate the financial strain already impacting American families.

The irony is palpable. During Trump’s first term, a proposal to allocate $3 billion from a COVID-19 stimulus package to replenish the SPR was vehemently opposed by Schumer and fellow Democrats. They labeled it a “bailout” for the oil industry, effectively halting the effort.

At that time, oil hovered around $29 a barrel. Today, prices have surged past $110, a level not seen since 2022. This dramatic increase underscores the potential value of a fully stocked reserve – a reserve Democrats previously resisted building.

The SPR boasts a capacity exceeding 700 million barrels, but current holdings are significantly lower. This is largely due to two substantial releases authorized under the previous administration, responding to both the economic fallout of the pandemic and the energy cost spikes following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

By the end of the prior administration, the reserve held approximately 415 million barrels. Schumer actively supported both of those drawdowns, creating a clear contrast with his earlier opposition to bolstering the stockpile.

The current situation is further complicated by recent events in the Middle East, specifically Operation Epic Fury and Iran’s subsequent actions targeting the Strait of Hormuz – a critical waterway for global oil transport. This has effectively constricted the flow of oil, exacerbating price pressures.

Currently, there are no public indications the administration intends to tap the SPR. Instead, Energy Secretary Wright suggests the priority is reopening the Strait of Hormuz by diminishing Iran’s capacity to disrupt tanker traffic.

Wright anticipates any disruption will be relatively short-lived, lasting “weeks, certainly not months.” He believes neutralizing the threat will unlock investment, facilitate trade, and ultimately restore energy prices to previous levels, framing it as a necessary, albeit temporary, sacrifice.
