A significant political force within the House of Representatives is demanding concrete evidence in the impeachment proceedings against Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio. The National Unity Party (NUP), the second-largest bloc in the chamber, signaled it will not lend its support to a case it deems insufficient.
Antipolo Representative Ronaldo Puno, chairman of the NUP, articulated the party’s position with stark clarity: they seek more than allegations. The NUP intends to meticulously scrutinize the evidence presented, hoping for compelling proof – even a “smoking gun” – to justify sending the case to the Senate for trial.
The party fears that a weak case would not only be dismissed by the Senate but would also fundamentally damage the integrity of the impeachment process itself. A flimsy complaint, they argue, diminishes the seriousness of this crucial constitutional mechanism and erodes public trust.
This stance comes after the House Justice Committee recently determined that two of the four complaints filed against the Vice-President met the initial threshold for substance. These complaints will now advance to the next phase, where the strength of the evidence will be rigorously assessed.
The accusations leveled against Vice-President Duterte are substantial and far-reaching. They include allegations of misusing significant public funds allocated to both her office and the Department of Education, where she previously served as secretary.
Further, the complaints allege illicit wealth accumulation, attempts to undermine the stability of the government, and even a conspiracy to harm President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife, and a former Speaker. The Vice-President has vehemently denied all of these charges, setting the stage for a potentially explosive and closely watched impeachment battle.
