Southeast Asia’s packaging industry is poised for significant expansion, fueled by a surging demand for cutting-edge solutions in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors. While food packaging remains a cornerstone, these newer industries are rapidly becoming the primary drivers of growth and innovation.
Manufacturers are increasingly focused on packaging that guarantees complete product safety, a shift that’s reshaping investment decisions. They aren’t simply buying machines; they’re investing in future-proofed automation and precision, anticipating increasingly stringent regulations and consumer expectations.
Beyond safety, a growing wave of interest in sustainable packaging is sweeping through the industry, particularly among larger companies committed to environmental responsibility. This demand is pushing innovation towards eco-friendly materials and processes.
The Philippines is showing particular enthusiasm for advancements in food processing and packaging machinery, with consistent participation from the Department of Trade and Industry in regional exhibitions. Buyers are actively seeking solutions for key agricultural commodities like coconut and mango.
Currently, the Philippines largely exports raw agricultural products, missing opportunities to maximize value through local processing. A pattern exists where commodities are shipped abroad only to be repurchased as finished ingredients, mirroring similar trends observed in Thailand with crops like cassava.
Despite this challenge, the Philippine processing and packaging industry demonstrates a promising growth trajectory, projected at around 3.2% annually. Packaging volume reached 78.5 billion units in 2024 and is forecast to climb to 91.8 billion units by 2029, signaling increased consumption and ongoing innovation.
The annual ProPak Asia exhibition serves as a crucial platform for showcasing these advancements, attracting over 2,500 brands from 45 countries. The event highlights over 18,000 technologies and machinery, reflecting the industry’s dynamic evolution.
The 33rd edition of ProPak Asia, scheduled for June 10-13, 2026, will place a strong emphasis on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, machine vision, and robotics, shaping the future of processing and packaging across the entire value chain.
