Asia’s largest celebration of spontaneous creativity is back: the Manila Improv Festival (MIF). After a year’s pause, the festival promises a renewed surge of laughter and captivating performances, bringing the art of improvisational theater to the forefront.
The festival arrives at a pivotal moment, as improv comedy gains mainstream recognition thanks to the viral success of groups like SPIT Manila. This year, MIF aims to broaden its reach, inviting a more diverse audience to experience the thrill of unscripted storytelling.
Improvisational theater is a unique art form – a world built on the spot. Scenes unfold, stories emerge, all sparked by the energy of the audience and the quick wit of performers.
“Manila Improv Fest began with SPIT in 2012, and we’ve been dedicated to celebrating it every two years since,” explains festival director Irvinne Redor. This year marks a special occasion, as the festival finds a new home at the prestigious Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati.
The Proscenium’s stage will become a global meeting point for improvisers, a platform to showcase both established talents and rising stars from the Philippines. The theme, “Rise to the Moment,” perfectly encapsulates the spirit of improv – embracing the unexpected and turning it into art.
Over 70 improv acts from the Philippines and more than 20 other countries will take the stage from March 25 to 29. The festival’s opening night will feature a dynamic collaboration between SPIT Manila, Galaw.Co Dance Theater, and Drum Circle PH.
Audiences can also look forward to performances from beloved Filipino improv groups like Housekeeping Improv, Noted with Thanks, Isprikitik Improv, and Buwan ng Wika Improv, spread across The Proscenium Black Box Theater and intimate pocket venues.
The international lineup is equally impressive, boasting renowned groups such as Oshow from Japan, Landry and Summers from the US, Formosa Improv Group from Taiwan, and Beijing Improv from China. Performers from India, Australia, South Korea, and Singapore will also contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the festival.
“For most improvisers, this art form isn’t just a skill – it’s a passion, a home,” says MIF artistic director Karl Echaluse. “We’re thrilled to welcome friends from around the world and share the joy of improv with Filipino audiences.”
Beyond the stage, the festival will offer over 30 workshops led by both local and international experts. These sessions will delve into a wide range of improv techniques, providing opportunities for both seasoned performers and curious newcomers to hone their skills.
The decision to postpone the festival last year, due to a bustling theater season, ultimately allowed the organizers to secure a truly exceptional venue for this year’s event. The anticipation has been building, and the team is eager to deliver an unforgettable experience.
Produced by Sanghimig Performing Arts and Travel Consultancy in association with SPIT Manila, the Manila Improv Festival is poised to be a landmark event, celebrating the power of spontaneity, collaboration, and the sheer joy of making something from nothing.
