AI GONE WILD: Family SUES OpenAI After Daughter's Life SHATTERED!

AI GONE WILD: Family SUES OpenAI After Daughter's Life SHATTERED!

The family of twelve-year-old Maya Gebala, critically injured in the Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia shooting, has filed a lawsuit alleging OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, possessed crucial knowledge of the impending tragedy.

The legal claim, filed in B.C. Supreme Court, asserts that OpenAI was aware the shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, was using their chatbot to meticulously plan a mass-casualty event mirroring the horrific attack that unfolded in Tumbler Ridge.

Court documents detail Van Rootselaar’s disturbing interactions with ChatGPT, including explicit posts referencing gun violence. Despite shutting down the shooter’s accounts, OpenAI allegedly failed to alert law enforcement to the potential threat.

Maya Gebala, 12, was critically injured in the Tumbler Ridge, B.C., shooting on Feb. 10, 2026.

Adding to the gravity of the allegations, the lawsuit contends that Van Rootselaar was a minor when he began using ChatGPT, and OpenAI neglected to enforce age verification or parental consent procedures, despite company policies requiring them for users aged 13 to 18.

Maya remains hospitalized, recovering from devastating injuries sustained during the February 10th shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where six people lost their lives before the shooter took his own life.

In a recent update, Maya’s mother, Cia Edmonds, shared a poignant moment: the removal of her daughter’s breathing tube. Edmonds described the experience as “terrifying,” witnessing her daughter’s discomfort, but ultimately celebrating a significant step forward in her recovery.

Tumbler Ridge survivor Maya Gebala continues to improve at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

The shooting unfolded after Van Rootselaar fatally shot his mother, Jennifer Strang, and eleven-year-old half-brother, Emmett, at their home before turning his violence towards the school. Maya was struck in the neck and just above her left eye.

The tragedy has ignited calls for stricter regulations surrounding access to social media and generative AI for young people. Chambers of commerce in both Tumbler Ridge and Prince George are advocating for restrictions for those under sixteen.

Neil Godbout, CEO of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the immense power of these tools and the need to protect children from unrestricted access, citing a similar ban on social media for users under 16 in Australia as a potential model.

This push for regulation follows a previous tragedy in Prince George, where a twelve-year-old boy died by suicide after being linked to online sexual extortion, further highlighting the dangers lurking in the digital landscape.

The revelation of Van Rootselaar’s violent posts on ChatGPT and OpenAI’s failure to notify authorities has fueled the debate, prompting a critical examination of the responsibilities tech companies bear in safeguarding vulnerable youth.
