A fierce Democratic primary battle is unfolding in Texas, pitting newcomer Representative Christian Menefee against veteran Congressman Al Green. At the heart of their contest lies a starkly different approach to a familiar target: former President Donald Trump and the pursuit of his impeachment.
Menefee, who recently won a special election following the passing of Representative Sylvester Turner, has pledged to continue the push for Trump’s impeachment – a cause championed by Green for years. However, Menefee insists his strategy will be focused on building broader support within the Democratic party, aiming for actual success where Green’s efforts have repeatedly fallen short.
The collision course between the two Democrats was set by Texas’s recent redistricting plans, designed to eliminate several Democrat-held seats. This prompted Green to seek reelection in the very district Menefee currently represents, igniting a heated primary challenge.
While Menefee avoids direct criticism of Green’s impeachment attempts, he emphasizes a pragmatic approach. He intends to file articles of impeachment with the clear goal of securing a vote – either a passage or a near passage – demonstrating tangible progress and uniting the Democratic caucus.
Green’s previous impeachment efforts, though attracting support from over 140 Democrats in one instance, ultimately failed. Significant numbers voted against the measure or abstained, highlighting the deep divisions within the party. Menefee believes a more collaborative strategy is essential to overcome these obstacles.
For two decades, Green has positioned himself as a leading voice of opposition to Trump, even drawing national attention for disruptive protests during State of the Union addresses. He was ejected from the chamber in both 2025 and 2026 for defiant acts against the former president.
Green has framed his impeachment attempts as a test of loyalty for his fellow Democrats, demanding they take a clear stand on Trump’s alleged misconduct. Outside groups have echoed this sentiment, urging Democratic leadership to support his efforts.
Menefee, however, dismisses the idea of “messaging votes” and insists his focus will be solely on achieving a successful impeachment. He argues that any effort he undertakes must be driven by a genuine desire to achieve a concrete outcome and benefit the American people.
With neither candidate securing a majority in the initial primary, the race will now head to a runoff election on May 26th. The outcome will not only determine who represents the district but also signal the direction of the Democratic party’s approach to holding the former president accountable.
The contest represents a fundamental choice for Texas Democrats: a continuation of Green’s unwavering, often confrontational stance, or a more pragmatic, collaborative path forward led by Menefee.
