NATION FROZEN: Deadly Ice Storm Incoming!

NATION FROZEN: Deadly Ice Storm Incoming!

A dramatic shift in the weather is brewing across Eastern Canada, poised to deliver a potent combination of heavy rain and crippling ice. Initial forecasts are being revised, suggesting conditions could be far more severe than previously anticipated.

Environment Canada has issued urgent warnings for Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada, describing a “prolonged” and “widespread” freezing rain event. The potential for significant property damage, widespread travel disruptions, and extensive power outages is now very real.

Southern Ontario is bracing for a deluge beginning Tuesday night, with localized flooding expected in the Greater Toronto Area. Within a single 24-hour period, the region could receive rainfall equivalent to more than half its typical monthly total.

Travellers are urged to stay off of flooded roadways due to incoming severe weather.

A yellow alert rainfall warning is currently in effect for Toronto, predicting 20 to 40 millimeters of rain over the next day and a half. Authorities urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and low-lying areas, warning of potential washouts near waterways.

The saturated ground, or areas already frozen, will struggle to absorb the incoming rainfall, exacerbating the risk of flash floods and pooling water. This creates a dangerous situation for commuters and residents alike.

While the rain is expected to move eastward by Wednesday, a sharp temperature drop will follow. Overnight Wednesday, temperatures will plummet to -2°C, falling further to -3°C on Thursday morning, potentially turning any remaining moisture into treacherous ice.

Ottawa and Montreal are facing the brunt of the impending “critical freezing rain event.” Forecasters warn of potential ice accumulation reaching 10 to 20 millimeters – levels reminiscent of the devastating ice storm of April 2023.

That earlier storm crippled parts of Ontario and Quebec, leaving countless residents without power and causing widespread damage. Experts are now preparing for a similar scenario, with potential transportation delays and cancellations a near certainty.

The risk of power outages is particularly high, as even a relatively small amount of ice buildup on trees can cause branches to snap and fall onto power lines. Residents are advised to prepare for extended outages.

Air travel is already anticipating disruptions, with airlines adjusting schedules for Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. Passengers are strongly encouraged to check flight statuses frequently.

Authorities recommend taking proactive steps to prepare. Stocking up on essential supplies is a prudent measure, given the potential for hazardous road conditions and prolonged power outages.

Parking vehicles away from trees with potentially vulnerable branches is also advised, minimizing the risk of damage from falling limbs. This storm demands respect and careful preparation.

Even a brief respite from the freezing rain won’t offer complete relief. Flurries are predicted for Toronto on Friday morning, with temperatures remaining below freezing, extending the period of hazardous conditions.
