A three-year-old mystery surrounding the fatal shooting of Oshawa man Michael Nigris is poised to unfold further as Durham Regional Police prepare to address the media Wednesday morning.
Detectives will reveal new details at a 10 a.m. news conference held at police headquarters in Whitby, offering a critical update in a case that has haunted the community since March 30, 2023.
Nigris was gunned down in the parking lot of an Oshawa plaza, just outside the Cash Connections store where he worked, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services and desperate life-saving attempts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The initial investigation revealed the suspect fled in a stolen vehicle – a Black Ford F-150 Raptor, originally taken from Brampton and later abandoned in Toronto. Police quickly recovered the truck, but the shooter remained at large.
Witnesses described the first suspect as a male of slight build, concealing his face with a dark surgical mask and clad in a dark hooded sweatshirt bearing the Puma logo, black Puma jogging pants, and black Air Force One running shoes.
The investigation broadened several months later with the identification of a second potential suspect: a male with short dreadlocks and glasses, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with “Champion” in white, black pants, and black running shoes.
Driven by grief and a relentless pursuit of justice, Nigris’s family publicly offered a $15,000 reward in January 2024 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for his death.
“My brother was an incredible man; a proud Canadian and an even prouder uncle,” his sister, Katherine Kollaard, stated, her words echoing the family’s profound loss and unwavering hope for answers.
Durham Regional Crime Stoppers is actively involved, offering a potential $2,000 cash reward for tips that contribute to the resolution of this case, and can be reached anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
