FUEL PRICES SOAR, TRAFFIC VANISHES: What's REALLY Happening on NLEX?

FUEL PRICES SOAR, TRAFFIC VANISHES: What's REALLY Happening on NLEX?

A shadow of uncertainty hangs over major thoroughfares as rising fuel costs, fueled by global tensions, threaten to disrupt the flow of traffic. NLEX, a vital artery connecting Metro Manila to the north, anticipates a potential dip in vehicle volume – a familiar pattern observed during previous oil price surges.

Luis Reñon, NLEX’s President and General Manager, estimates a possible 1% to 1.5% decrease in daily traffic. While the tollway currently anticipates around 350,000 vehicles each day, sustained price increases could jeopardize reaching that target, impacting commuters and logistics alike.

The company is proactively seeking solutions, engaging with the Department of Transportation to explore relief measures for haulers and truckers. Discussions center around potential rebates, aiming to mitigate the financial strain and prevent a significant slowdown in the movement of goods.

Meanwhile, progress continues on the Metro Manila Skyway Stage 3, a crucial elevated expressway linking Makati City to NLEX. A key section, Section 2A, is slated for completion by the second quarter of next year, promising to further ease congestion.

This ambitious project, connecting the bustling city center to the northern provinces, will seamlessly integrate with the NLEX-SLEX Connector Road, creating a continuous, elevated pathway for efficient travel. Officials are confident in the project’s timeline, aiming for completion by mid-next year.

The Skyway project is a collaborative effort between Citra Central Expressway Corp. and Metro Manila Skyway Corp., while NLEX Corp. spearheads the NLEX-SLEX Connector Road – both vital components of the nation’s infrastructure network.

These projects represent significant investments by Metro Pacific Investments Corp., a key player in the Philippine infrastructure landscape. The company, backed by First Pacific Co. Ltd., continues to drive development across vital sectors, including tollways, mining, and telecommunications.
