The wave of discarded computers grew last year as Windows 10 reached its end of life. Many upgraded, seeking the latest technology, but a hidden complication often lurks within those retired machines – forgotten software licenses.
Consider Microsoft Office, or its modern iteration, Microsoft 365. These powerful suites typically come with license restrictions, limiting installations to a specific number of devices. Sending an old computer to recycling without first deactivating a license can effectively waste a valuable resource.
Fortunately, the digital age offers a solution. Microsoft has transitioned to online license management, providing a crucial safety net for those upgrading or disposing of their hardware. You’re no longer tethered to the physical machine to control your software access.
Reclaiming your license is surprisingly straightforward. Begin by accessing your Microsoft account through any web browser – simply navigate to account.microsoft.com and log in with your credentials.
Within your account dashboard, locate and select the “Subscriptions” option in the left-hand menu. This will lead you to a detailed overview of your Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365.
Select “Manage” next to your Microsoft 365 subscription. Scroll down until you find the section titled “Microsoft 365 apps for your devices” and click the arrow icon on the far right. This reveals a list of all devices currently linked to your account.
Identify the device you’ve retired or recycled. Select “Sign out” next to that device’s entry. A confirmation prompt will appear; select “Sign out” again, then “Done” to finalize the process.
With those few clicks, your account is officially disconnected from that device, freeing up the license for use on a new computer or tablet. It’s a simple step that prevents wasted software and ensures you’re getting the full value from your investment.
