A chilling scene unfolded Thursday afternoon at Temple Israel Synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, as a vehicle was deliberately driven into the building and gunfire erupted.
Initial reports confirmed a harrowing attack, swiftly met by the synagogue’s armed security team. Their immediate engagement proved critical, preventing potential tragedy within the sacred space.
Authorities have now identified the gunman as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese national who arrived in the United States in 2011. He entered the country on a visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and later became a naturalized citizen in 2016.
Ghazali, born in Lebanon in 1985, reportedly used a rifle in the assault. He rammed a vehicle into the synagogue before a shootout ensued with the security personnel.
The aftermath was devastating; the vehicle caught fire, and Ghazali’s body was found severely burned. Despite the violence, remarkably, no injuries were reported among those inside the synagogue.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that Ghazali is deceased. The vehicle used in the attack was registered to a naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon residing in Dearborn, Michigan.
