For centuries, it existed only as a whisper in historical texts – Alexandria on the Tigris, a city founded by Alexander the Great himself. Now, archaeologists have definitively located this lost metropolis, revealing a once-thriving trade hub swallowed by the sands of southern Iraq.
Established in the fourth century B.C., the city wasn’t merely a settlement; it was a strategic linchpin, designed to connect the riches of India with the heart of Mesopotamia and the bustling Mediterranean world. Its fate, however, was sealed when the Tigris River dramatically altered its course, plunging the city into obscurity after the third century A.D.
The rediscovery wasn’t a sudden revelation, but a painstaking process spanning years. Researchers meticulously mapped the city’s fortifications, intricate street grids, and distinct city blocks, relying on the revealing eye of drone imagery and the precision of high-resolution geophysical scans.
Work at the site began in the 2010s, a period fraught with danger as ISIS controlled the region. Excavations were conducted under the watchful gaze of armed guards, limiting research to surface surveys. Yet, even under these constraints, the potential of the site was undeniable.
What they’ve uncovered is remarkable: the foundations of grand temple complexes, bustling workshops complete with ancient kilns and furnaces, and the remnants of a sophisticated harbor and canal system. Despite repeated flooding over the centuries, the city remains surprisingly well-preserved.
Like its more famous Egyptian namesake, Alexandria on the Tigris was deliberately chosen for its unique position – a crucial intersection between river and sea. Alexander the Great himself selected the location in 324 B.C., recognizing its strategic importance for trade with India, as documented by the Roman author Pliny the Elder.
The sheer scale of the city has astonished archaeologists. Spanning 2.5 square miles, it’s enormous for an ancient settlement, dwarfing even the major capitals of the time, including Seleucia on the Tigris and Alexandria on the Nile. The size of the individual city blocks is equally extraordinary.
The quality of the geophysical data is described as “stunning,” allowing researchers to identify walls almost immediately beneath the surface. This exceptional preservation offers a rare opportunity to reconstruct an entire city plan without extensive excavation.
The project’s origins trace back to 2016, with initial work led by British archaeologists Jane Moon, Robert Killick, and Stuart Campbell. Their foundational research paved the way for the current discoveries, despite the challenging conditions – including scorching summer temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit and pervasive air pollution.
Future investigations will focus on the city’s distinct quarters and the workshops that fueled its economy. However, continued research hinges on securing further funding. The potential rewards are immense, offering a unique window into the often-overlooked Parthian Empire.
This empire, which controlled the city centuries after Alexander’s conquest, remains one of antiquity’s most enigmatic powers. Remarkably little is known about its history, structure, or culture, making Alexandria on the Tigris a potentially invaluable source of information.
Because the site has remained undisturbed by later construction, it presents an unparalleled opportunity to reconstruct an entire ancient urban landscape. Researchers hope to complete a comprehensive geophysical survey this year, unlocking even more secrets of this lost city and the world it once connected.
