HUMAN TRAFFICKER GETS A SLAP ON THE WRIST!

HUMAN TRAFFICKER GETS A SLAP ON THE WRIST!

A chilling case concluded in a Montreal courtroom Thursday, revealing a betrayal born from a digital connection. Bryanna Abbruzzo, 24, received a sentence of house arrest, a curfew, and probation for her role in exploiting a woman she initially befriended online.

The victim, a young woman of similar age to Abbruzzo, connected with her through a social app, sharing common interests and confiding in her about a vulnerable living situation. What began as a seemingly harmless connection quickly spiraled into a nightmare when Abbruzzo and her mother, Sonia Abbruzzo, invited the woman into their home.

The initial harmony dissolved into a calculated campaign of terror and control. Between July and November 2022, the Abbruzzos subjected the victim to forced labor, demanding endless domestic tasks as a condition for shelter. This coercion escalated into a horrific exploitation that lasted nearly six months.

Judge Jean-Jacques Gagné acknowledged the profound impact on the victim, who lost a staggering 66 pounds during her ordeal. He detailed evidence of malicious acts, including the cruel mockery of the victim when she was forced to endure the cold outdoors.

While Sonia Abbruzzo, deemed the mastermind, received an eight-year prison sentence last year, Bryanna Abbruzzo’s sentence was significantly lighter. The judge cited her immaturity, naiveté, and the overwhelming influence of her mother as mitigating factors.

Despite recognizing Abbruzzo’s active participation and failure to intervene, Gagné determined the risk of reoffending was low. The sentence – two years less a day – includes 12 months of house arrest, a 12-month curfew, and three years of probation.

Sonia Abbruzzo was sentenced to an eight-year prison term for her part in the crime.

The judge emphasized the sentence was lenient, yet proportional to Abbruzzo’s degree of responsibility. He underscored the premeditation and meticulous planning orchestrated by Sonia Abbruzzo, who “organized, pulled the strings directly, humiliated the victim and kept her under control.”

A pre-sentencing report described Abbruzzo as lacking the maturity expected of a 24-year-old, suggesting a delayed emotional development. The judge concluded she did not pose an immediate threat to public safety.

As part of her sentence, Abbruzzo is required to complete 240 hours of community service and is prohibited from residing with her mother, severing the toxic dynamic that fueled this devastating exploitation.

The case serves as a stark warning about the dangers lurking behind online connections and the insidious nature of coercive control, leaving a lasting scar on the victim and a somber reflection on the complexities of familial influence.
