A classroom at Old Dominion University became the scene of unimaginable tragedy Thursday, when Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, an ROTC instructor, was fatally shot. The suspect, Mohamed Jalloh, a naturalized U.S. citizen, deliberately targeted the ROTC class, confirming its identity before unleashing the attack.
The swift and courageous actions of the ROTC cadets themselves brought the ordeal to a halt. They physically subdued Jalloh, effectively ending the threat, though tragically, he was found deceased at the scene. Their bravery undoubtedly prevented further loss of life on the campus.
Court records reveal a disturbing history behind Jalloh’s actions. He was previously convicted in 2016 of providing material support to ISIS, a connection that would resurface with devastating consequences. The details of his past involvement paint a chilling picture of radicalization and intent.
Federal prosecutors had originally sought a 20-year prison sentence for Jalloh, arguing he was fully aware of his actions and the potential ramifications. However, he ultimately received a sentence of just over eleven years from Senior U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady, a significantly lighter punishment.
The investigation uncovered a complex plot orchestrated by an ISIS member overseas. Jalloh was connected with someone he believed to be a fellow extremist, but who was, in reality, an FBI confidential source. He even traveled to Nigeria as part of the planned operation.
Evidence presented during sentencing revealed Jalloh had become disillusioned with his own military service, influenced by the extremist rhetoric of Anwar al-Awlaki, a notorious Al Qaeda figure killed in a drone strike years prior. This internal conflict seemed to fuel his descent into radicalization.
Upon his release in 2024, Jalloh was subject to conditions including a ban on contact with terrorist organizations and ongoing computer monitoring. Despite these measures, the underlying threat remained, culminating in the horrific events at Old Dominion University.
The judge who handed down the initial sentence, Liam O’Grady, had announced his transition to senior status in 2020, precluding any appointment by the subsequent administration. His replacement, Judge Patricia Giles, was nominated by President Biden.
