A well-known CNN anchor recently fell victim to a clever parody account while reporting on a high-profile story.
During an edition of "CNN This Morning," anchor Audie Cornish shared a series of statements from Republicans who claimed to have recently spoken with Senator Mitch McConnell, who was reportedly hospitalized in Washington D.C.
Cornish read on-air comments from a number of prominent Republicans, including CNN contributor Scott Jennings, and statements attributed to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso.
However, in a shocking turn of events, Cornish also showed a post from the X account @RepJackKimble, which she believed was a legitimate statement from a real person.
The post, which was actually a clever fabrication, claimed that the account's author had spoken with Senator McConnell and praised his sharpness and listening skills.
Unfortunately for Cornish, the Rep. Jack Kimble account is a political parody that claims to represent California's fictional 54th congressional district.
The person behind the account has a history of duping corporate media outlets, including the Huffington Post and the Washington Post back in 2021.
According to their Amazon biography, the Rep. Jack Kimble account is the brainchild of a Chicago school teacher, who has cleverly used satire to expose the flaws in mainstream media reporting.
The embarrassing blunder has sparked widespread ridicule on social media, with many users criticizing CNN for failing to verify the authenticity of the statement.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking and verifying information before reporting it on-air.
