Manila Water Prepares for El Niño with Supplemental Water Supply from Wawa and Laguna de Bay

Manila Water Prepares for El Niño with Supplemental Water Supply from Wawa and Laguna de Bay

The Manila Water Co., Inc., the concession holder of Metro Manila's eastern zone, is taking proactive measures to mitigate the effects of El Niño, which has led to a decline in water levels at Angat Dam. The company plans to tap into the Wawa and Laguna de Bay for additional raw water to supplement its existing resources.

Manila Water's operations group director for the east zone, Josemar B. Emboltorio, stated that the company will continue to improve its existing supply systems and add new components to ensure reliability and availability. This includes the commissioning of two new water treatment plants (WTPs) that could treat up to 420 million liters per day of water.

The 200-MLD East Bay Phase 2 WTP, which sources from the Upper Wawa Dam, is due for completion by the third quarter. Meanwhile, the 220-MLD Kasaykat WTP, which sources from the eastern shore of Laguna de Bay, is expected to start delivering water by the fourth quarter.

Manila Water now serves its nearly eight million customers through a more diversified supply system than during previous El Niño events, with total water output hitting 1,730 MLD. The company has also integrated the Upper Wawa Dam into its supply network, making it better equipped to handle severe supply disruptions.

Manila Water's chief operating officer for the east zone, Arnold Jether A. Mortera, stated that the company is now prepared to handle the challenges posed by El Niño. "From a system with no alternative sources in the past, we have built a more secure and resilient water supply network designed for today's challenges," he said.

While customers may experience low water pressure, Manila Water assured that there will be no interruptions in water supply due to the mitigation measures in place. The company supplies around 7.93 million customers across the east zone of Metro Manila and surrounding areas.
