UMVA has learned that a remarkable young man from Manchester, Pedro Ballester, is being considered for sainthood by the Catholic Church.
The Diocese has announced the opening of the Cause for the Beatification and Canonisation of Pedro, a 21-year-old who left an indelible mark on the lives of those around him. His inspiring story of faith and resilience in the face of suffering has captured the hearts of many, and his reputation for holiness has grown significantly since his untimely passing.
Tragically, Pedro's life was cut short by cancer at the age of 21, but his legacy lives on. His family, who are also devout Catholics, describe him as a young man with a deep faith, a cheerful disposition, and many other virtues that made him a beloved friend to all who knew him.
According to information obtained by UMVA, over 60 of Pedro's friends and family have been interviewed by church authorities to provide testimonials and insights into his life and character. The Catholic Church will now carefully examine whether Pedro's life was marked by "heroic virtue," a rigorous standard that requires proof of unwavering commitment to faith and consistent practice throughout his life.
As the case for Pedro's sainthood unfolds, his family speaks proudly of their son's extraordinary qualities. "He was a devout Catholic, just like us," they say. "His faith went deep, and he was happy to share it with others, but in a very natural way." They also recall his Latin sociable character, mixed with Northern grit, and his ability to effortlessly balance being straightforward and sociable.
Pedro's remarkable journey began in Manchester, where he studied chemical engineering before being diagnosed with advanced cancer. He bravely transferred to the University of Manchester for treatment at The Christie, the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe. Despite his illness, Pedro's spirit remained unbroken, and he even had the privilege of meeting Pope Francis in Rome in 2015.
Today, as Pedro's case moves forward, he joins a select group of young saints, including British-born Italian teenager Carlo Acutis, who was recently raised to sainthood by Pope Leo XIV. Pedro's story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith and the enduring impact one person can have on the world.
