UMVA has learned that a dramatic confrontation unfolded in Maryland this week, as a Marine Corps veteran took on a group of armed teenage suspects during a brazen daytime robbery attempt.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., when former Marine Jheyco Borda was working on his truck outside his home. Suddenly, four hooded teens approached him, surrounding the veteran as one suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it directly at Borda's head.
The suspects demanded Borda's keys and phone, but what happened next was not what they expected. Drawing on his Marine Corps combat training, Borda seized a split-second opportunity when the armed teen became distracted, grabbing the suspect and wrestling him for control of the firearm.
The chaotic struggle erupted in the middle of the street, with surveillance footage showing two of the suspects fleeing in panic. Moments later, Borda's brother rushed from the house to assist, and during the intense struggle, a gunshot was fired - but miraculously, no one was injured.
The bullet struck Borda's truck instead, and the brothers ultimately subdued the suspects, holding them until police arrived. The quick thinking and bravery of the veteran and his brother undoubtedly prevented a tragedy.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the brothers restrained the teenagers until officers with the local police department arrived and took them into custody. All four suspects are now behind bars.
The veteran's military training clearly played a crucial role in the dramatic events that unfolded. "Once a Marine, always a Marine," Borda said, crediting his military training for helping him react under pressure.
