A software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission system has been identified as the cause of thousands of noncitizen registrations to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.
State officials described the flaw as “unacceptable,” blaming the software vendor for a glaring mistake that persisted for a full year before correction. The governor also noted that previous administrations had failed to bring the issue to light or demand accountability.
In response, the governor has initiated steps to replace the vendor responsible for the error and to prevent a recurrence of the problem.
The software provider, IDEMIA, stated that its system only transmits application data and that final validation is performed by the Division of Elections, effectively shifting responsibility for the mistake onto the state.
A White House spokesperson highlighted the timing of the governor’s announcement and suggested that the federal government may investigate the situation, while underscoring national concerns about noncitizen voting.
The spokesperson also emphasized the need for legislation, referencing the Save America Act, to ensure that only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in federal elections.
The incident has sparked renewed attention to voter registration integrity and the broader debate over noncitizen participation in elections across the country.
