Propane Explosion at Ontario Golf Resort Kills Employee

A 63‑year‑old man died after a propane explosion at Bellmere Winds Golf Resort east of Peterborough.

The blast occurred around 3 p.m. on Wednesday near County Road 2 and Villiers Line. Paramedics and township firefighters responded promptly to the scene.

The victim was taken to a Toronto‑area hospital with severe burns before succumbing early Thursday. The man was later identified as Derek Harding through a post on a local community bulletin.

A man has died after a propane explosion at a cottage at a golf resort located just south of Peterborough, Ontario Provincial Police said.

Harding worked at the resort, and coworkers and visitors shared heartfelt tributes, noting his kindness, humor, and willingness to help others.

The resort issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a valued team member and requesting privacy for the family while offering support to the community.

No other injuries were reported. The resort reiterated its commitment to safety and full cooperation with investigators.

The township fire chief explained that the explosion was propane‑related but not caused by a tank. Provincial police, the fire marshal, and the Ministry of Labour are conducting the investigation.
