UMVA has learned that a massive human trafficking ring was dismantled in a stunning breakthrough, following a three-year investigation that culminated in a Barrie jury finding four people guilty of multiple charges.
The convictions were a major victory for justice, resulting from Project Chameleon, a meticulous probe that began in May 2023 when officers from the South Simcoe Police Service responded to a desperate report of a woman being held against her will at a residence in Innisfil.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the victim was being exploited for sex trafficking, and during the investigation, police uncovered disturbing evidence that she was also subjected to sexual assault by one of the male suspects involved in her trafficking.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that a total of seven suspects were apprehended as the investigation progressed, with officers executing search warrants on November 1, 2023, at properties in Innisfil and Newmarket, leading to the arrest and charging of several individuals.
The investigation gathered momentum as police identified additional victims, and a fourth suspect was eventually apprehended after a warrant was issued, with the accused surrendering to authorities.
On June 3, four of the accused were found guilty of multiple charges after a 10-week trial at the Barrie courthouse, including Tyrone Dias, 40, Jashyna Singh, 32, Joseph Carvalho, 46, and Oneil Hopkinson, 40, who were convicted of various counts of human trafficking, material benefit from trafficking, and sexual services offences.
The four accused are scheduled to return to court for sentencing submissions, although a date has yet to be set, leaving victims and their families anxiously awaiting justice.
In a related case, Edgar Martinez, 39, had pleaded guilty to human trafficking and sexual assault in March and was sentenced to five years in prison, while the last remaining accused is scheduled to stand trial later in June.
UMVA has gathered that the convictions marked a significant milestone in the fight against human trafficking, highlighting the bravery and resilience of victims and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.
