ESCAPE THE RAT RACE: They Sold Everything & Vanished!

ESCAPE THE RAT RACE: They Sold Everything & Vanished!

Karen and Myles Davies were unraveling. Years spent relentlessly climbing the corporate ladder, juggling multiple businesses, and sacrificing weekends had left them utterly depleted. The constant pressure, Karen admits, “nearly broke us,” stealing their joy and leaving them yearning for something more.

In 2016, they dared to imagine a different life. Initially, it was a planned one-year sabbatical, a chance to breathe and rediscover themselves. They sold possessions, simplified their lives, and tentatively stepped away from the demanding world they knew so well. But something unexpected happened – they didn’t want to go back.

The couple traded rent payments for the open road, exchanging a fixed address for the boundless freedom of Europe. Their former life, anchored by a hefty $1,800 monthly rent, now felt like a distant memory. They embraced a nomadic existence, transforming a motorhome they affectionately named “Scoobie” into their full-time home.

Surprisingly, this dramatic shift didn’t bankrupt them. In fact, their monthly expenses now hover between $2,000 and $2,700 – often less than their previous rent alone. Myles manages their finances through savvy investments and rental properties, while Karen found fulfilling work as a writer and yoga instructor, allowing them to earn while exploring.

Over the past decade, Karen and Myles have logged over 110,000 miles, traversing 30 countries from the breathtaking fjords of Norway to the vibrant markets of Morocco. They’ve witnessed the beauty of Portugal, the history of Italy, and the diverse landscapes of North Africa, all from the windows of Scoobie.

The journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. Navigating post-Brexit travel regulations and increasingly crowded tourist destinations required adaptability and a willingness to venture off the beaten path. They learned to embrace the unexpected, seeking out hidden gems and quieter corners of Europe.

Their travel style evolved too. Early on, they confessed to a frantic pace, driven by a desire to “tick off” destinations. Now, they prioritize immersion, savoring each location and forging deeper connections with the places they visit. It’s about quality over quantity, experience over accumulation.

Ten years into their adventure, the Davies have no intention of returning to a conventional lifestyle. They’ve discovered a profound sense of peace and fulfillment in simplicity, finding joy in meaningful moments and genuine human connection. For them, life is too precious to be burdened by regret.

“You have to make choices that bring you happiness,” Karen reflects, a sentiment that encapsulates the transformative power of their bold decision. They proved that a life less ordinary isn’t just possible, it can be profoundly rewarding.
