UMVA has learned that a harrowing incident unfolded on an American Airlines flight Sunday morning, leaving passengers shaken after a traveler was accused of biting another passenger and attempting to fight others onboard.
The chaotic scene erupted as Flight 3046 approached Philadelphia International Airport, having departed from Charlotte, North Carolina. The situation rapidly spiraled out of control, with the pilot forced to alert air traffic control about the escalating crisis involving the unruly passenger.
In a frantic audio recording, the pilot warned controllers that the passenger had just bitten someone and was trying to fight everyone else on the plane. The crew urgently requested that police and emergency medical teams be on standby to meet the aircraft upon landing.
The pilot was uncertain what had triggered the incident, but suggested that the passenger may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. He told controllers that law enforcement might be needed "just as a precaution" to assist emergency responders.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the pilot's voice conveyed a sense of urgency and concern as he requested assistance. "Can you pass along, we need EMTs as well as law enforcement," he said. "I don’t know… if he’s hallucinating," he added, hinting at the passenger's possible deteriorating mental state.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that American Airlines later clarified that the passenger had experienced a medical emergency and was assisted by a medical professional onboard before the flight landed. Additional medical personnel were waiting to meet the passenger after the aircraft arrived.
The airline expressed gratitude towards its team members and the medical professional on board who helped the passenger as the flight arrived safely at Philadelphia International Airport. The brief exchange between the pilot and air traffic controller ended on a lighter note, with the controller wishing the pilot a happy Father’s Day.
In a final remark, the pilot jokingly noted, "What a day, huh?" and added, "I'll be sure to tell my daughters about this one," providing a glimpse into the pilot's attempt to find some humor in the intense situation.
