Illinois Governor JB Pritzker decisively influenced his state’s primary elections, demonstrating a powerful ability to shape political outcomes. However, his aggressive support for Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton is now creating significant friction with a key Democratic constituency: the Congressional Black Caucus.
Pritzker invested millions of his personal fortune to propel Stratton to victory in the Senate primary, a move that directly challenged the CBC’s preferred candidate, Representative Robyn Kelly. Kelly, backed by a substantial $30 million from Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, ultimately fell short despite the financial backing.
The CBC is signaling a clear message to Pritzker: his intervention is unwelcome and will not be easily forgiven. Representative Gregory Meeks, head of the CBC’s PAC, stated bluntly that Pritzker will need to seek reconciliation, not the other way around.
This rift carries potential consequences for Pritzker’s political future, particularly if he considers a run for the presidency in 2028. The CBC wields considerable influence within the Democratic Party, having been instrumental in the success of both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Members of the caucus are openly expressing their displeasure, demanding an explanation for Pritzker’s actions. Representative Bennie Thompson emphasized that the governor “has to justify what he did” in interfering with the Senate race.
Pritzker’s financial contribution – at least $5 million to a super PAC supporting Stratton – proved crucial in overcoming a barrage of negative advertising funded by the cryptocurrency industry. These ads aimed to prevent Stratton from securing the nomination.
Beyond the financial aspect, some CBC members are concerned that the competitive race between Stratton and Kelly fractured the Black vote, potentially weakening the community’s overall influence. The internal competition created a divide that some believe was avoidable.
Representative Yvette Clarke, chair of the CBC, delivered a scathing rebuke, stating Pritzker’s actions were “beyond frustrating” and that his “behavior in this race won’t soon be forgotten.” She argued a governor should not overtly manipulate a primary election.
Stratton herself campaigned as a vocal opponent of Donald Trump, even releasing an ad featuring explicit language directed at the former president – an ad that notably included Pritzker. This bold strategy, coupled with Pritzker’s support, proved effective in securing her victory.
The CBC is now establishing a clear framework for any future presidential candidate seeking their endorsement. Representative Joyce Beatty made it clear that any contender, including Pritzker, will need to actively earn their support, acknowledging the caucus’s strategic importance in national elections.
