The search for Nahida Bristy, a doctoral student at the University of South Florida, has ended in heartbreaking confirmation. Remains discovered near a Tampa Bay bridge on April 26th have been positively identified as the missing student, authorities announced Friday.
The identification, made through DNA analysis, dental records, and clothing, brings a somber conclusion to weeks of uncertainty. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister conveyed the devastating news, expressing condolences to Bristy’s family in Bangladesh and outlining plans for the respectful return of her remains.
Bristy’s disappearance followed closely on the heels of fellow USF doctoral student Zamil Limon, who vanished within hours of her on April 16th. Limon’s remains were tragically found on the Howard Frankland Bridge just days before, intensifying the grief and urgency of the investigation.
Sheriff Chronister spoke of the profound loss, emphasizing that both Bristy and Limon were exceptionally promising individuals with bright futures stolen too soon. He affirmed a steadfast commitment to pursuing justice and uncovering the full truth behind these senseless tragedies.
Hisham Abugharbieh, Limon’s roommate, is currently in custody, facing charges in connection with both murders. The charges include domestic violence, false imprisonment, tampering with evidence, and the unlawful handling of human remains.
Surveillance footage placed Bristy on the University of South Florida campus at noon on April 16th, and she was reported missing the following day by a concerned friend. Limon was reported missing the day after that, prompting a larger investigation that officially transferred to the Sheriff’s Office on April 22nd.
A search of Limon and Abugharbieh’s apartment yielded disturbing evidence: Limon’s ID, eyeglasses, a bloodstained and torn shirt, and phone cases belonging to both victims. This discovery fueled an extensive search, including marine units and dive teams deployed to areas indicated by the victims’ last known GPS signals.
The grim discovery of Bristy’s remains came on April 26th, when kayakers found a trash bag entangled in a fishing line within the mangroves near Interstate 275. The advanced state of decomposition necessitated several days for positive identification.
