Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed his concerns about the current midfield duo of Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson. Speaking on his show, Ferdinand stated that he does not think this pairing can control a game or execute quick transitions through the pitch.
Ferdinand pointed out that while Anderson and Rice are skilled at retrieving the ball and stopping their opponents, they are not the best assets for the team in terms of getting the ball off the back line and transferring it through the team with precision. He suggested that other players, such as Kobbie Mainoo, possess these skills and could be more effective in this role.
Mainoo has been a productive player for Manchester United, earning a spot in the World Cup squad. However, he has yet to play a minute in the tournament. Ferdinand believes that Mainoo is the ideal player to beat the press and play or dribble through it, skills that are essential for a midfielder.
Ferdinand also praised Mainoo's performance in the Euro 2024 tournament, where he was the team's best player. He noted that Mainoo has a unique ability to switch the pace of the game, running with the ball or passing it through the lines, which is crucial in international football.
An alternative solution suggested is for Jude Bellingham to drop deeper into midfield, allowing another attacking midfielder, likely Morgan Rogers, to come into the line-up. Ferdinand does not oppose this idea, highlighting Bellingham's versatility and ability to play in various midfield positions.
England faces Panama in New York and New Jersey on Saturday, with a victory ensuring the team tops Group L. A draw would also be enough, provided Ghana does not beat Croatia.
