PRIEST'S DARK SECRET: 5 YEARS IN JAIL FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE!

PRIEST'S DARK SECRET: 5 YEARS IN JAIL FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE!

A shadow fell over a quiet corner of Prince Edward Island as Brendon Earl Gallant, a former Catholic priest, received a five-year prison sentence. The 80-year-old stood before the court, the weight of decades-old crimes finally settling upon him – the sexual abuse of a young altar boy in the late 1980s.

The victim, whose identity remains protected by a publication ban, first came forward to the RCMP in March of 2023. The investigation unearthed a disturbing pattern of manipulation and betrayal, revealing how Gallant, a figure of religious authority, exploited a vulnerable boy’s trust. It began with seemingly innocent attention, a priest taking an interest in a parishioner.

That attention quickly escalated. The boy, eager for the acceptance of an adult, found himself drawn into Gallant’s world, invited to the rectory for overnight visits. These weren’t innocent sleepovers; they were opportunities for abuse, for Gallant to violate the trust placed in him. The details, revealed in an agreed statement of facts, paint a harrowing picture of exploitation.

Former P.E.I. priest Brendon Earl Gallant, 80, seen here exiting provincial court in Georgetown in August 2025, was sentenced on April 7 to five years in prison for sexual assault.

The abuse wasn’t limited to unwanted physical contact. On occasion, the victim was given alcohol, and a particularly chilling incident involved waking to find blood in the toilet, leading him to believe an attempt at sexual penetration had occurred. The trauma of those nights haunted him for decades, severing his connection to the church and fueling a long struggle with alcohol and mental health.

For years, the victim carried the secret alone, the emotional burden a crushing weight. Gallant, meanwhile, lived without consequence, until the courage of the survivor finally broke the silence. His arrest in March 2025 marked the beginning of a painful reckoning.

Initially, Gallant pleaded guilty, affirming his free will and signing the agreed statement of facts. However, a subsequent attempt to withdraw the plea was abandoned, and the case returned to court. At sentencing, the judge acknowledged Gallant’s unsettling claim that he pleaded guilty not out of remorse, but to spare the Diocese embarrassment.

Despite this admission, Gallant’s lawyer asserted his client now accepts responsibility. The Crown attorney highlighted the profound breach of trust and the lasting impact on the victim’s life. The delays in the case had only compounded the survivor’s anxiety, yet his willingness to move forward offered a glimmer of closure.

Beyond the prison sentence, Gallant faces a 20-year registration as a sex offender, a weapons prohibition, and a DNA order. Strict conditions were imposed, forbidding contact with the victim and restricting his proximity to places where children gather. He is barred from any position of trust or authority involving those under the age of 16.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of abuse of power and the enduring strength of those who find the courage to speak out. It’s a story of shattered innocence, decades of hidden pain, and a long-delayed, but ultimately delivered, measure of justice.
