A California court has ordered Kevin Morris, known for his financial support of Hunter Biden, to pay $50,000 to Garrett Ziegler and his research group, Marco Polo. This ruling concludes a contentious legal battle stemming from a 2022 phone call and allegations of deception.
The dispute began when Morris received a phone call from someone he believed to be a Democratic strategist, discussing the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop. Following the call, Morris received a cryptic image – a squid accompanied by the phrase "NOTHING IS BEYOND OUR REACH" and the name "Marco Polo," instantly revealing the caller’s true identity.
Morris subsequently filed a lawsuit against Ziegler, accusing him of harassment, impersonation, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He alleged Ziegler had deliberately misrepresented himself to extract information about the laptop, a claim that ultimately failed to gain traction in court.
Ziegler’s attorney, Jennifer Holliday, expressed dissatisfaction with the $50,000 judgment, deeming it insufficient after three years of legal conflict. She has already petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case, challenging California’s anti-SLAPP law, which she argues paradoxically prolonged the legal proceedings.
Holliday contends the state’s free speech protections were misused, allowing weak accusations to persist. She believes the Supreme Court should scrutinize the case, highlighting the unusual circumstances and potential implications for similar future disputes.
Sources close to Morris’s legal team dismissed the Supreme Court filing as unlikely to be accepted, noting Ziegler’s side had initially requested $300,000 to settle the case. They characterized the court’s decision as a formality, bringing the matter to a close.
Throughout the legal process, a critical weakness in Morris’s case emerged: he was unable to definitively link the phone call to Ziegler. No phone number or concrete evidence connecting the two was ever presented to the court.
Holliday emphasized this lack of evidence, stating that Morris pursued the lawsuit for three years without establishing a clear connection between himself and Ziegler during the crucial phone conversation. The identity of the actual caller remains undisclosed.
Ziegler, in turn, characterized Morris as an enabler of Hunter Biden, accusing him of knowingly pursuing a frivolous lawsuit. He pointed to Morris’s substantial financial support of Biden – covering rent, art purchases, and private jet travel – as evidence of his complicity.
If Morris fails to remit the $50,000 within 30 days, Ziegler’s legal team has secured the right to conduct a debtor’s examination, further scrutinizing Morris’s financial situation and ability to fulfill the court order.
