The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed changes to heavy-duty truck emissions rules, which would save truckers an estimated $12 billion, including up to $6,000 per new truck. This would help lower transportation costs and prices for American families. The proposal would eliminate certain engine deratements and speed restrictions for new highway engines and vehicles, as well as new nonroad engines and equipment, including farm machinery. Instead, warning alerts would be implemented to allow operators to continue working until repairs can be made safely.

Previous policies have been criticized for making the delivery of goods more expensive, which is then passed on to consumers. By making trucks cheaper and more reliable, the proposal aims to ensure that the supply chain remains as affordable as possible for the American people. The proposal would also reduce costly emissions warranty requirements while maintaining nearly 90% of the planned NOx emissions reductions. This would give manufacturers more time and flexibility to meet the updated standards.

The proposal addresses a significant problem caused by DEF system failures, which can force trucks and farm equipment into "limp mode" by reducing their speed to just five miles per hour. This can leave truckers stranded and farmers losing hours or even days of productivity during critical work periods. The proposed changes would make products more reliable and decrease the impact of DEF system failures, while also reducing the price of the whole supply chain by lowering the cost of new trucks.

The issue has highlighted the potential costs of government overreach, with the Secretary of Agriculture stating that the billions in savings will directly benefit rural communities that rely on diesel-powered engines to deliver food, families, electricity, and other essential goods. The latest proposal follows a broader pledge to roll back certain green regulations, with the goal of unleashing American energy and promoting choice in the vehicle market.

The proposal has been characterized as a response to the previous administration's efforts to push Americans towards electric trucks through regulations.
